On Sunday afternoon, a five-alarm fire broke out at Lake Pavilion, Flushing’s critically acclaimed Cantonese restaurant. The fire started around 3:40 p.m. in the restaurant’s basement, burned through the first floor, and went on for five hours until firefighters were able to get it under control around 8:30 p.m. There were, thankfully, no injuries. It’s an unfortunate turn for the hugely popular, seemingly always busy restaurant, which New York critic Adam Platt named the city’s third Best Chinese Restaurant and Seafood Restaurant. According to a message posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page, it will temporarily shutter while undergoing “major renovations” before reopening in the spring.

South Street Seaport is a historic area in the New York City borough of Manhattan.1885 Cargo Ship and Flagship of the Museum FleetHistoric Ship | Open Wed – Sun 11am – 5pm*The 1885 ship Wavertree has a well-documented and fascinating history. Built in Southampton, Great Britain, she circled the globe four times in her career, carrying a wide variety of cargoes. The ship called on New York in 1896, no doubt one of hundreds like her berthed in the city. In 1910, after thirty-five years of sailing, she was caught in a Cape Horn storm that tore down her masts and ended her career as a cargo ship. She was salvaged and used as a floating warehouse and then a sand barge in South America, where the waterfront workers referred to her as “el gran Valero,” the great sailing ship, because even without her masts she was obviously a great windjammer. She was saved by the Seaport Museum in 1968 and towed to New York to become the iconic centerpiece of the “Street of Ships” at South Street. Not many people know this but I always wanted to open a Ralphs Italian Ice Store myself!I thought about doing this 15 years ago when there were not a lot of stores around. Now there are 80 all over Long Island, NYC, N. Eastern New Jersey and White Plains too.A little bit of history from their website:Ralph Silvestro, came to the United States from Italy in 1928. A group of people met on August 12, 1844 to organize and build an Episcopal Church. General Thomas Floyd-Jones donated the land.
